‘How do we know what humanity lies hidden under the rags and filth of a mangled life?’

Australia, 1788. The First Fleet lands at Sydney Cove. Half of those aboard are convicts – murderers, thieves, and prostitutes – exiled to the shores of this strange new land. Eager to impress his superiors, Second Lieutenant Ralph Clark takes up the task of bringing culture to the burgeoning colony. He will direct the country’s is first play. With a cast of criminals, two copies of the play, and some of his cast facing the noose it seems doomed from the start.

Our Country’s Good explores the redemptive power of art, asking if it is better to punish – or to rehabilitate?
