‘A Concert for the People of Bath’
Stravinsky,The Firebird (excerpts)
Rachmaninov, Piano concerto No.3
Mussorgsky, Pictures at an Exhibition (orch. Ravel)
Piano: Peter Donohoe
Conductor: Jason Thornton
Bath Philharmonia present their second annual concert dedicated to the memory of local philanthropist Brian Roper; a concert that encourages future generations to develop their love of classical music.
We will be joined for this concert by Peter Donohoe, who is widely regarded as one of the foremost pianists of his time. He returns to Bath Philharmonia to perform the same concerto, Rachmaninov Conceto No.3, that crowned him joint winner of the International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1982.
As well as excerpts from Stravinsky’s thrilling Firebird, with it’s rhythmic intensity and breathtaking finale, the orchestra will perform Pictures at an Exhibition; probably Mussorgsky’s most famous composition. Written to perpetuate the memory of his dear friend, artist and architect Victor Hartman, Mussorgsky musically depicts a set of ten figurative art works. After the amazing success of last year’s memorial concert, at which live NASA footage accompanied The Planets Suite by Holst, Bath Philharmonia have invited back visual artist, Adrian Wyard to premiere a live visual accompaniment to Pictures at an Exhibition. b
