The 3rd annual Bath Jazz Weekend, Friday 6 – Sunday 8 January 2023

Yes! This is the end to the dearth of a full-scale, top-flight jazz programme! After the inevitable Covid/Omicron cancellation in 2022, these 3 days (in the ‘whatever shall we do after Xmas and New Year’ days of early 2023) present an international-level line-up of some of the UK’s finest musical performers.

THE LAST OF THE BLUE DEVILS
Film: Kansas City’s musical heritage with Count Basie & more

A fascinating and musically thrilling documentary that charts the heyday of Kansas City jazz, set – oh yes! – in a musician’s union version of a social club!

Keith and Julie Tippetts’ most celebrated protegé, Theo May is a strikingly original and imaginative violinist and bandleader who made an incredible impact at the recent Tippett Celebration event in Bristol.

KAREN STREET'S L'ESPIRIT DU JAZZ
Karen Street/Sam Dunn/Charlie Pyne/Katie Patterson
Inspired by French swing, Latin and Tango alongside original compositions and jazz standards, the band is led by Karen Street’s scintillating accordion style (as featured alongside Martin Taylor, Guy Barker, Nikki Iles and many, many more).

The indefatigable, inexhaustible, ever creative Paul Dunmall – one of the most outstanding saxophonists and improvisers on the international scene - brings us this new quintet - his choice of leading young players.

COMFORT IN CHAOS

Led by vibraphonist Harriet Riley and trumpeter Pete Judge, this project, commissioned for the charity 1625 Independent People which supports young people who are homeless, leaving care or at risk, mixes music and spoken word, sometimes unadorned and direct but always passionate in expressing truth through art.

ANDREW MCCORMACK

Solo piano
As the pianist with a fundamental role in bands with Soweto Kinch, Jason Yarde and, currently, touring with Kyle Eastwood, Andrew McCormack’s solo career is equally adventurous, as evidenced by the 5 star reviews for his recent solo album

JAKE MCMURCHIE QUARTET
Jake McMurchie/Dan Moore/Riaan Vosloo/Matt Brown
‘If there were a prize for forming bands with instantly distinctive sounds, Bristol-based saxophonist Jake McMurchie would surely carry it off’ - London Jazz News.  Definitely a Bristol A-Team, led by Get The Blessing’s hard-driving front man, the quartet round off the Weekend programme with the commitment and energy of capital-J-for-Jazz.
