Kevin Brown and the Shackdusters

Chapel Arts Centre

The Delta Bluesman from Lancashire.

Kevin Brown was first transported to the blues universe after watching Muddy Waters on the television in 1964. Regardless of his Lancashire roots, Kevin was going to be a bluesman.

Five years of studious guitar practice later, he made a pilgrimage to Mississippi and signed his pact. He sought out the man who inspired Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson. Son House liked Kevin’s passion and took him under his wing. He taught him the emotional power of simple words, and how to make a slide guitar howl at the moon. He gave a kid from Lancashire his blues credentials and sent him out to spread the message.

It led him from the crossroads down a long road of searching, pain and enlightenment. He absorbed the musical emotion and technique of Leadbelly, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee. He moved to Austin and served is apprenticeship in the roadhouses and bars of Texas.

Fourteen albums and 1000s of gigs later, Kevin Brown is one the most respected blues guitarists, singers and songwriters on both sides of the Atlantic. He’s attracted plaudits from the great Albert King, Martin Simpson, Joe Boyd and JJ Cale’s wife and musical collaborator, Christine Lakeland. He’s played on Mark Knopfler’s recordings and Andy Fairweather Low has played on Kevin’s. Both are Kevin Brown fans.

If you doubt a kid from Preston could really play the Delta Blues, just ask the punters in the juke joints of Clarksdale, Mississippi, who have taken him to their hearts and flock to see him when he visits for a few months every year. Kevin Brown isn’t just a disciple of heritage of the Delta Blues; he’s part of it.

Six Strings And A Dream

Between his modest home in the green hills of Box in Wiltshire, an old houseboat in Clarksdale and a grass hut on the dazzling beaches of South Goa, Kevin Brown crafted his latest album, a glorious mix of deep blues and uplifting tropical grooves called “Six Strings And A Dream”. He has woven a tapestry of life stories, sung in his signature, laid-back, sand-blown voice and enveloped in his timeless picking and slide guitar.

Kevin is taking this new material out where it belongs, on the road. He has selected a tight band of friends and soulmates, the Shackdusters, featuring his regular rhythm section with Duncan Kingston on bass and Mick Candler on drums. The band relies heavily upon the grooves Kevin sets out within his songs to give this formation the necessary energy that brings his material truly to life. They form the perfect vehicle for Kevin within which he can travel down the many paths of his renowned musical journey. This core unit is responsible for Kevin’s stripped down recent recordings, Grit and as well as 6 Strings and a Dream, both huge favourites amongst fans of his slide playing and laid back vocal style. All he wants is to share his story-telling and his songs, which say it all.
