MF1 Takács Quartet

One of the world’s finest string ensembles

Assembly Rooms

Widely acknowledged as one of the world’s finest string ensembles, the Takács Quartet is the perfect choice to open our festival.

A great favourite with Bath audiences, this year they will welcome new viola player, Richard O’Neill, who has joined the Takács since they last appeared here in 2018. Their programme will begin, fittingly, with Mozart, here a relatively rare work which stands alone between the composer’s better-known Haydn and Prussian sets of string quartets, remarkable for its elegance and expressive light and shade. Then to Beethoven’s Quartetto Serioso, a treat from the group whose complete Beethoven String Quartet recording is regarded by many as one of the major musical achievements of recent years. The Takács conclude with Dvořák’s astonishing String Quartet No 13 in G major Op 106, with its intense and lovely slow movement.
