Philip Moore and Simon Crawford-Phillips occupy a unique place amongst piano duos: they are established chamber musicians in their own right, yet since 1995 have devoted several thousands of hours to this most exacting of disciplines, giving them extraordinary musical empathy. Today’s programme opens with Mozart’s Adagio & Allegro, written originally for a mechanical organ. Then to the heat and passion of Southern Spain for Ravel’s own two-piano transcription of Rapsodie espagnole, before heading to Russia for the music of Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes. Igor Stravinsky composed his ballet scores at the piano and used 4-hands piano versions to rehearse the productions so the orchestral drama translates into pianistic drama with great effect.
