Director: Hirokazu Kore-eda

Starring Haruka Ayase, Daigo Yamamoto, Rimu Kuwaki.

In the near future, Kensuke (Daigo Yamamoto) and Otone (Haruka Ayase) are in the depths of grief. In an effort to cope with a devastating loss, they bring a humanoid robot into their home but the robot, Kakeru (Rimu Kuwaki), is a perfect replica of their son and a constant reminder of his passing.

Reminiscent of Spielberg’s A.I., Hirokazu Kore-eda masterfully explores grief, childhood and innocence in this soft sci-fi drama. Gently investigating what it means to be human in the digital age, the film asks whether technology can comfort us without deepening the wounds it tries to heal. Tender and quietly profound, Sheep in the Box offers a moving insight into the fragile boundaries between love, loss and artificial life.

The film will be introduced by Albert Sobilo - a grief and loss counsellor based in Bath. Alongside his private practice, he volunteers as an end-of-life companion at a local hospice and co-facilitates a free community Death Café at Bath Central Library. He writes about grief and film on his Substack publication, Grief in Translation, and recently wrote about Maborosi, Still Walking, and After Life as part of an essay on Kore-eda's approach to grief.

A thoughtful, poignant, sometimes funny and whimsical reflection on the future of humankind.
