Bath Opera – Gounod’s ‘Faust’

Bath Opera – Gounod’s ‘Faust’

Roper Theatre

Discover the gripping story of Faust, a man hell bent upon winning his heart’s desires, stopping at no cost, not even his soul.

Against a background of civil war, a community steeped in tradition, and challenged by technological changes, stage director Dave Key-Pugh sets this spectacular opera in the present day, somewhere in deepest Europe.

Faust is an ageing scholar. Disappointed with life, he makes a deal with the devil. Lured into temptation by the enchanting Méphistophélès, he trades his morality for the earthly pleasures life has to offer.

However, Faust’s world begins to fall apart as he comes to realise that dealing with the devil is never as straightforward as it may first seem!

Bath Opera’s magnificent production is laden with drama, wit, theatricality and soaring melodies including favourites such as The Jewel Song, Soldier’s Chorus and ‘Le veau d’or’.

The renowned chorus of Bath Opera are joined by a wonderful cast of talented soloists under the baton of Rupert Drury to bring Gounod’s soaring melodies and powerful evocation of this immortal story to life.

‘The opera is gorgeously tuneful and tells the story of Faust, a man who makes an unlikely deal with the devil.’ TimeOut
