Award winning Bath G&S Society returns to The Mission with a sparkling festive production of what many people regard as the most perfect of Gilbert & Sullivan’s collaborations – Iolanthe.
It’s the night before Christmas, the Lord Chancellor’s country manor falls silent. In the beautifully decked entrance hall, the Fairy Queen summons the fairies from far and wide to descend from the top of their Christmas trees for the annual festive celebrations. For one fairy, this Christmas will be particularly eventful. Iolanthe, banished from fairyland for marrying a mortal, is pardoned and reunited with her son Strephon. With the Peers arriving soon after their Boxing Day shoot to woo Phyllis, Strephon’s secret lover, what mischief will ensue? Politics intervenes and the fairies head off to Parliament to do battle with the Peers…who will win?
Sullivan’s wonderfully tuneful score is full of Mendelssohnian and Wagnerian touches from the rousing ‘March of the Peers’ to the famous ‘Nightmare Song’. Together with Gilbert’s brilliantly witty script and lyrics this will be an undoubted seasonal treat for all the family!
