Haydn
Symphony No 44 in E minor Hob 1:44 Trauersinfonie
Hard on the heels of an acclaimed season at the Royal Opera House singing Musetta in La Bohème, and performances at this summer’s BBC Proms, Lucy Crowe will once again join forces in Bath with David Bates’ popular period instrument ensemble La Nuova Musica for a programme of delightful concert arias for soprano and orchestra including a selection of musicologist Timothy Jones’ thoughtful completions of unfinished Mozart fragments. These will be followed by Haydn’s Symphony No 44 in E minor 1:44 Trauersinfonie. Translated as Mourning Symphony, the composer requested the slow movement for his own funeral, and the finale is one of Haydn’s most remarkable achievements, the very embodiment of sturm und drang.
