J1 Shaken Not Stirred: Charlie Higson and Kim Sherwood on Writing Bond

The Bath Festival 2024

The Guildhall

Bestselling author and comedian Charlie Higson joins author and lecturer Kim Sherwood for an in-depth discussion on James Bond, the world’s greatest literary spy. Both Kim and Charlie have written Bond books and know the character inside out. They’ll talk to Joe Haddow about how they approached writing such an iconic character for a contemporary audience, and why he continues to delight audiences across the world over 70 years since his creation.

Kim Sherwood is an author and creative writing lecturer at the University of Edinburgh. Her first novel, Testament, won the Bath Novel Award and was longlisted for the Desmond Elliot Prize. In 2019, she was shortlisted for the Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year Award. Her second book, Double Or Nothing, is the first in a trilogy, commissioned by the Ian Fleming Estate, to expand the world of Bond. She lives in Edinburgh.

Charlie Higson is an author, actor, comedian and writer for television and radio. His Young Bond series began with Silver Fin in 2005 and was followed by: Blood Fever (2006); Double or Die (2007); Hurricane Gold (2007); and By Royal Command (2008). All five novels entered the children’s bestseller charts in the top five.

On His Majesty’s Secret Service, his Sunday Times bestselling 007 adventure, will be published in paperback on Thursday 6 June, in celebration of the official birthday of King Charles III. This new edition includes revised text and exclusive bonus content, updating the original version which was written in just six weeks, to mark the Coronation in 2023 and the 60th anniversary of Ian Fleming’s On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.

As with the hardback publication, all royalties from the sale of the book will go to support the work of the National Literacy Trust.
