H6 Politics Made Simple with Tatton Spiller and Ben Riley-Smith

The Bath Festival 2024

The Guildhall

Our politics and our democracy appear to be fundamentally broken. But that doesn’t mean that all hope is lost. Join Simple Politics founder, Tatton Spiller, and journalist Ben Riley-Smith for a lucid, entertaining and positive look at how we got to where we are – and how we can chart a path towards a kinder, more hopeful future. Because politics is about improving the world – and we can do better.

Tatton Spiller is the author of The Breakdown and the founder of Simple Politics. SP has been helping people engage with politics for the best part of a decade, gaining over a million social media followers in the process. When things are complex in politics, people turn to him and his team. Individually, Tatton talks to as many people as possible about politics, on TV & radio (including BBC Two, Sky News, 5Live), with live audiences, in schools, on podcasts and more. With a background in classroom teaching, journalism, education at the Houses of Parliament and event production, nobody writes about politics in the way he does.

‘A calming voice in a world of shouty politics and distracting polarisation … The reason and hope the world needs right now!’ Tom Allen, comedian

‘I have no clue about politics - I find it messy, confusing and frustrating. This book came along, breaking things down simply and humanly to make me see that politics can be about hope.’ Rose Ayling-Ellis

Ben Riley-Smith has spent a decade at the heart of Westminster's media. He has a history of finding scoops and writing major pieces - over the last calendar year, an incredible 120 of the Telegraph's front pages have been written by him. He has been twice shortlisted for Political Reporter of the Year at the British Press Awards, and is an experienced Broadcaster, presenting BBC Radio 4's Week in Westminster, and appearing across the BBC, ITV, LBC and STV.

‘Riley-Smith has excellent, garrulous sources, produces plenty of fresh stories, and writes entertainingly and very lucidly about some of the most remarkable characters modern Britain has seen; and their feuds. This book provides strong lessons from (recent) history for the modern Tories; and plenty of ammunition for their foes’ - ANDREW MARR

‘Future historians, keen to attribute a sense of purpose to the last thirteen chaotic years of Conservative government will take Ben Riley-Smith’s lucid and riveting book as their guide.’ - ALAN JOHNSON

‘Not only a fascinating dissection of the psychology of the Conservative Party, but a wonderfully written canter through an extraordinary decade and a bit. Highly recommended.’ - CHRIS MASON
