Beethoven String Quartet in A major Op 18 No 5
R Schumann String Quartet in A major Op 41 No 3

The Doric String Quartet has been described by Gramophone magazine as “one of the finest young string quartets”, whose members are “musicians with fascinating things to say”. In this Bath concert they will be addressing Beethoven and Schumann. Starting with one of Beethoven’s first set of six string quartets, No 5 of the Op 18 quartets, which evokes both Haydn and Mozart whilst revealing the composer’s own emerging style and talent in this exuberant and musically textural work. Then to Robert Schumann. 1842 was Schumann’s year of chamber music and he wrote his (only) three string quartets then in just five weeks, with this, the lyrical and romantic third, dashed off in days.
