ABOUT THIS TOUR

There are over 80 plaques on buildings in Bath commemorating illustrious past residents, yet only a small fraction of them denote women. This flies in the face of the fact that many remarkable Bath women have made their mark across all walks of life, often overcoming considerable prejudice to do so.

This walk led by qualified Blue Badge tour guides will include talented women already firmly entrenched in the story of Bath, from novelist Jane Austen to trailblazing astronomer Caroline Herschel. It will also highlight women who deserve to be better known. Many worked to change attitudes of the day, such as social reformer Hannah More, Victorian philanthropist Angela Burdett-Coutts, suffragette Mary Blathwayt and surgeon Maud Forrester-Brown, who excelled in a role previously dominated by men. Women in Bath also played key roles in business and innovation. Elizabeth Cambridge combined a career as a successful artist with helping her husband William Harbutt invent the recipe for Plasticine. Henrietta Laura Pulteney, Countess of Bath, developed the Pulteney Estate.
