Durufle Requiem by candlelight

Durufle Requiem by candlelight

St Mary’s Church, Bathwick

Join Noctis for their candlelit vigil on Armistice Day as they perform music from the Renaissance by Lobo, Tallis and Palestrina alongside the centrepiece of the concert, the Requiem by Maurice Duruflé.

The Requiem is based on Gregorian chant, which is in its very essence the purest form of music, although the composer’s sensuous harmonies suffuse every note with feeling. Duruflé himself remarked that the Requiem is ‘not an ethereal work which sings of detachment from human concerns. It reflects, in the unchanging form of Christian prayer, the anguish of man faced with the mystery of his final end.’
