Iranian cinema before 1979 (ie before Ayatollah Khomeini) may have been dodgy, but it sure was a lot of fun. Patriarchal? Of course. Clunky? Naturally. Derivative? What else. This excellent documentary gives us a sense of the thrills of being able to watch such (now forbidden) films from a safe distance of decades, with the added benefit of a wide selection of clips. The point is to show how important these films were to a society going through rapid modernisation, where centuries of repression were upturned, only for it to come crashing back in.
