MENUAnora won the Palme d’Or and was a standout hit at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Directed by Sean Baker, known for The Florida Project, it chronicles the (mis)adventures of Ani, also known as Anora—a young woman of US/Uzbek heritage working as a stripper at Brighton Beach (not in Sussex, of course). Her life takes a dramatic turn when she meets the son of a Russian oligarch, who falls deeply in love with her. When they decide to formalise their relationship, his parents travel to America to prevent the marriage. Vanity Fair calls it a “raucous good time, with a gut-punch ending,” and critics praise Mikey Madison’s career-defining performance in the lead role.
SYNOPSIS:
Anora, a young sex worker from Brooklyn, impulsively marries the son of an oligarch. When news of their marriage reaches Russia, her fairytale romance is threatened as his parents travel to New York to annul it.
