MENURobert Harris’s novel is set in Rome at the time of the death of the Pope, and the process by which his successor is chosen - known as a conclave. You might naively think that this would be lots of saintly men deciding who is the best candidate, but you’d be wrong. It’s a power struggle for one of the most important and powerful roles in the world. And poor old Cardinal Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes) has the unenviable job of overseeing the process. The film also stars Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow and Isabella Rosselini, and gives us a compelling insight into what goes on behind closed doors in order to select the head of the Catholic Church. And of course there are secrets, revelations and unexpected twists. What could be more fun?
