The internationally acclaimed, Barcelona-based Cuarteto Casals are now firm favourites at Bath Mozartfest and we are delighted that they are opening this year’s festival with, of course, the music of Mozart. His first ‘Prussian’ Quartet, written for and dedicated to the cello-playing King of Prussia, came late in Mozart’s life and was written at the height of his powers as a chamber music composer. This is true of Haydn’s and Brahms’ works featured here, too. Brahms regarded the string quartet as a particularly important genre but only completed three, his A minor String Quartet is beautifully lyrical but with an underlying tension which finally explodes into a wildly exuberant flashing Hungarian dance. A wonderful start to Bath Mozartfest 2023.
