‘THE MIKADO’ - Bath G&S Society
presented by Bath Gilbert & Sullivan Society
Mission Theatre
MENUThe multi-award winning Bath G&S Society returns to The Mission Theatre to present four semi-staged concert performances of one of the most successful musicals of all time.
The Mikado was Gilbert and Sullivan’s ninth collaboration, opening at The Savoy Theatre on 14 March 1885 and running for 672 performances. Many regard it as their greatest achievement both musically and dramatically.
Nanki-Poo, the son of the Mikado, is in love with Yum-Yum, although she is engaged to Ko-Ko, the Lord High Executioner of Titipu. When the Mikado orders a beheading, Nanki-Poo agrees to lose his head on condition that he can be married to Yum-Yum for a month. Katisha isn’t happy about this arrangement as she wants to marry Nanki-Poo herself. The stakes are high and Ko-Ko has to make a life or death decision…
Despite the oriental setting, the target of Gilbert’s wit and humour is very definitely the Britain of his day – today’s audience will notice that in the last 140 years very little has changed. Alongside some of Sullivan’s greatest hits - ‘Three Little Maids from school’, ‘Tit Willow’ and the famous ‘Little List’ song - all the ingredients will be there to make this a not-to-be-missed treat for all the family.
‘… a close-knit group of performers that was well disciplined, supportive of each other and totally dedicated to their craft’. ROSE BOWL ADJUDICATION, Pirates of Penzance 2018
