Jane Campion directs a somber, tender tale of a mute Scottish woman (Holly Hunter) in the 19th century, sent to New Zealand with her young daughter and their prized piano, for an arranged marriage to a farmer (Sam Neill), but becomes entwined with his employee (Harvey Keitel).
