Tosca

Bath Opera

Malmesbury Abbey

Bath Opera makes its first appearance at Malmesbury Abbey with Puccini’s fabulous and tragic opera ‘Tosca’, sung in English.

Fitting the setting of the Abbey perfectly, ‘Tosca’ tells the story of how the love between diva Floria Tosca and painter Mario Cavaradossi becomes ensnared by the despotic regime that has taken over their city, in the shape of the evil Baron Scarpia, with tragic consequences.

Tosca is one of the world’s favourite operas with its moving story and wonderful Puccini arias, and it was made famous by Maria Callas. Bath Opera is fortunate to have in the lead role international soprano Ghiulnara Raileanu who has sung with the Polish National Opera and Moldova Opera. She is not only a fabulous singer but she looks a little like Maria Callas!

You can hear her sing one of the most famous arias here

Ghiulnara is supported by a strong cast including Robert Felstead as Cavaradossi and Niall Hoskin as Scarpia. The musical director is Peter Blackwood, and stage direction is by Jane Clark.
